Why this matters

Elections Alberta does not provide Albertans with a public process to verify whether their name was used on a petition sheet. That leaves people unable to check suspected misuse of their own information.

After the recent Alberta electors data leak, enough personal information was exposed that many people are reasonably worried about forged signatures or unauthorized use of voter information.

A referendum should not be certified until public trust in the process is restored.

What needs to happen

Before any referendum petition is certified, Alberta needs a transparent process that allows people to verify whether their own name appears on submitted petition sheets and challenge fraudulent signatures if necessary.
